Lobbe makes a ruckus

Port Adelaide is set to continue its free-wheeling, speed-based game after unveiling snippets of their summer work in an intraclub practice match at Alberton yesterday.

The flair and pace of Danyle Pearce and Daniel Motlop, the clever work of Justin Westhoff and the grunt of Kane Cornes was there again, along with a free-moving Warren Tredrea who journeyed up the flanks and seemed fit as a flea.

The treat of the day was to see the promise of the new being added to the old script, most notably ruckman Matthew Lobbe and Richmond recruit Jay Schultz.

As for the match itself, it ran to a fluid format, with several players changing teams to even it out and create different match-ups. Some kicked goals for both the team in the home jumper - the probables - and the one in the away jumper - mostly made up of the possibles.

Lobbe competed manfully in the ruck with Dean Brogan, who also had to deal with Justin Westhoff. Brogan shaded the pair, but neither of his opponents looked out of place.

Lobbe, who crossed from the Magpies to the Westies in the SANFL last year, has the size to compete with AFL ruckmen even though the tricks will take some time to develop.

What's better, he drifted forward and looked natural in the forward line, plucking down a couple of fine mark and cooly finishing his work.
